Phonics and Spelling are an important part of the English curriculum at Godinton Primary School. We have introduced spelling tests to children in years 4, 5 and 6. The spellings tests contain words from the high frequency words that children encounter during the Letters and Sounds programme and the DfE statutory common exception word lists.
Each child will be given a set of spellings to learn appropriate to their spelling ability and progress to the next set of spellings when the have demonstrated that they are able to spell the words correctly in their weekly test . When a child moves to the next set of spellings, a copy of the new word list will be sent home. The weekly spelling tests will be in addition to the structured spelling lessons in class which continue to focus on phonics, spelling strategies and rules.
